IDGAF Anymore. Turns Out, That’s Your Brain Working Properly.

What’s actually happening: the neuroscience of your new settings

Oestrogen was running a social compliance programme you didn’t know you had

Oestrogen does not only govern reproductive function. It is a neuroactive steroid with widespread effects across the brain, including, significantly, on the amygdala, the region responsible for threat detection and emotional response.

One of oestrogen’s less-discussed roles is its modulation of the fawn response: the social appeasement mechanism that sits alongside fight, flight and freeze in the stress response repertoire. Fawning is the drive to manage perceived threat through compliance: agreeing when you don’t agree, softening when you’d rather not, making yourself smaller so the room stays comfortable. It is not weakness. It is a neurologically driven behaviour that oestrogen actively supports.

Oestrogen increases oxytocin sensitivity, amplifies the neural reward of social harmony, and raises the neurological cost of conflict. In practical terms: for most of your adult life, your brain was biochemically incentivised to keep things smooth. Disagreement felt genuinely uncomfortable, not just socially awkward. Your nervous system was doing that.

As oestrogen declines in perimenopause, this system recalibrates. The neurological pull toward appeasement reduces. The amygdala’s social threat sensitivity shifts. The biochemical reward for keeping everyone happy diminishes. And you begin to notice, with some surprise, that you are no longer particularly interested in managing other people’s comfort at the expense of your own.

The prefrontal cortex upgrade nobody put in the brochure

The neuroscientist Laura Carstensen’s socioemotional selectivity theory describes this precisely: as time horizons shift, the brain becomes more ruthlessly efficient about what it allocates attention and energy to.

In midlife, you are not losing your ability to be socially flexible. You are gaining the neurological equipment to stop wasting that flexibility on things that don’t warrant it.

The woman who no longer laughs at jokes she doesn’t find funny, sits through meetings that could have been emails, or maintains friendships that have been running on obligation for a decade: her prefrontal cortex is working exactly as it should.

Cortisol’s contribution: when the alarm system gets tired of false positives

Chronic stress changes the threat calibration of the amygdala over time. A nervous system that has been running on elevated cortisol (the sustained, low-grade activation that characterises perimenopause for many women) eventually becomes less responsive to minor social stressors. Not because it’s given up, but because it has been in a genuine emergency for long enough that it has had to triage.

The things that used to register as threats (someone’s disapproval, an awkward silence, the ambient pressure to be likeable) begin to feel like noise rather than signal. Your nervous system has bigger things on its threat-processing list. The small social performances that used to cost you something now cost you more than you’re willing to pay.

This can read as impatience or irritability. It is more accurately described as a recalibrated sense of what actually matters. What the research actually calls this: authenticity, not dysfunction

The clinical literature has a habit of pathologising midlife women’s behaviour changes. Increased assertiveness becomes irritability. Reduced social compliance becomes mood dysregulation. The perfectly reasonable decision to stop attending events you never wanted to attend becomes withdrawal.

This framing has a pharmaceutical convenience to it that should be examined with appropriate scepticism.

What the research on emotional development actually shows is that authenticity (the alignment between internal state and outward behaviour) increases with age. The gap between what people feel and what they perform narrows. The energy previously spent on impression management becomes available for other things.

Brené Brown’s research on vulnerability and authenticity, Carstensen’s work on socioemotional development, and the broader positive psychology literature on midlife wellbeing all point in the same direction: the shift that begins in perimenopause is not a descent. It is, neurologically and psychologically, more accurately described as an arrival.

You are not becoming difficult. You are becoming precise.

The catch (because there is always a catch)

Here is where we stop being triumphant for a moment and get practical.

The IDGAF recalibration is real and, in its authentic form, represents genuine psychological development. But the same neurological shift that reduces pointless social performance can also show up as something less useful: disproportionate reactivity, hair-trigger irritability, the kind of sharp response that felt entirely justified in the moment and slightly less so three minutes later.

This is not the same mechanism. This is cortisol. This is the HPA axis dysregulation and progesterone decline that strips the nervous system of its buffering capacity and leaves the emotional response system with less insulation than it used to have.

The distinction matters because the responses look similar from the outside but have different origins and different solutions. Healthy IDGAF is quiet, deliberate, grounded. It doesn’t need to raise its voice because it’s not running on emergency fuel. It just declines, redirects, or exits.

The cortisol-driven version is louder, faster, and leaves a residue. It’s the version that snaps rather than declines. That’s not liberation. That’s a nervous system asking for support.

Neuroscientists have a name for what happens when the prefrontal cortex loses its regulatory grip on the stress system: amygdala hijack. The more evocative name, borrowed from evolutionary biology, is the crocodile brain: the ancient, reactive, threat-processing machinery that predates the sophisticated primate cortex by several hundred million years. The crocodile doesn’t deliberate. It doesn’t consider context or consequences or whether this is really the hill it wants to die on. It detects threat, and it snaps. Instantly, efficiently, and without particularly caring what anyone thinks of that.

When cortisol is chronically dysregulated, the crocodile gets loose. The prefrontal cortex (the part that would normally say ‘perhaps not here, perhaps not now’) is compromised by sustained stress hormone exposure and stripped of its buffering capacity by progesterone decline. What was a considered response becomes a reflex. What was clarity becomes just teeth.
